Postural Problems Becoming an Epidemic in Children 22 Apr 2026 If you’ve ever looked over at your child slumped over a tablet, hunched at the kitchen table, or carrying a bag that looks twice their size, you’ve already seen the problem firsthand. Poor posture in children is no longer a minor concern that sorts itself out with age. Research now shows it is widespread, it is worsening, and without intervention, it can follow children well into adulthood. A large-scale study of nearly 600,000 students found that 65.3% had incorrect posture. Fewer than one in five children had genuinely good posture. The reasons are largely lifestyle-driven. Children today sit more than any previous generation, spend hours looking down at devices, and spend less time in the kind of active, varied movement that builds the muscle strength their developing spines depend on. The good news is that children are also at the age where intervention is most effective, and there is a lot parents can do. Why Are Children’s Posture Problems Getting Worse? Postural problems don’t usually come from a single cause. For most children, it is a combination of daily habits that gradually push the body out of alignment. Screen time and sedentary behaviour sit at the top of that list. Children average 4.3 hours of device use every day, on top of more than five hours of sitting at school. We know there’s a correlation between screen time and posture. Children exceeding five hours of daily screen time had the lowest posture scores of all, with half reporting musculoskeletal complaints. Incorrect sitting posture at desks is nearly universal. The same research found that 90% of children assessed were sitting incorrectly at their desks, a figure that points to both habits and environment. Adult-sized furniture is a common contributor. When a chair is too large, a child’s feet can’t reach the floor, the lower back loses its support, and the whole spine compensates. This applies at home as much as at school. Proper desk ergonomics are crucial for children and adults alike. School bags play a role too. Bags that are too heavy, worn on one shoulder, or carried low on the back all add to postural load over time. Guidelines suggest bags should not exceed 10–15% of a child’s body weight, yet for many children this limit is regularly exceeded. Physical inactivity compounds everything. Only 25% of children in one study participated in regular sport or physical activity. The less active a child is, the weaker their core and postural muscles become. Weaker muscles mean the spine has less support to maintain proper alignment during all those hours of sitting. Why Children Are More Susceptible Than Adults Poor posture affects people of all ages, but children face a unique risk as their spines are still growing. In adults, the spine is fully formed. Poor posture causes pain, stiffness, and muscle fatigue, but the structural changes it can cause are more limited. In children, habitual poor posture during the years the spine is developing can lead to lasting changes in spinal curvature and alignment that become significantly more difficult to address once growth is complete. This is why the timing of intervention matters. Research shows the most rapid increase in postural problem prevalence occurs between the ages of 11 and 13, corresponding with the onset of puberty, growth spurts, and typically an increase in screen time and school workload. Acting before or during this window gives children the best chance of correction. Common Postural Problems in Children Child posture problems take several forms. Understanding what each one looks like helps parents identify them early. Forward Head Posture (Tech Neck) Forward Head Posture, also know as “tech neck” is the most prevalent postural condition in children today. A 2024 study of 983 children aged 8–12 found that 65.2% had forward head posture, where the head sits forward of the shoulders rather than balanced directly above them. It is primarily caused by looking down at phones, tablets, and laptops. For every centimetre the head moves forward from its neutral position, the effective load on the neck muscles increases dramatically, creating chronic strain on the muscles and joints of the neck and upper back. Rounded Shoulders Often seen alongside forward head posture, rounded shoulders occur when the muscles of the upper back weaken and the chest muscles tighten, pulling the shoulders forward and inward. It gives the appearance of a hunched upper body and is increasingly common in children who spend long periods at desks or screens. Kyphosis Kyphosis refers to an exaggerated outward curve of the upper back, more pronounced than the typical rounding associated with rounded shoulders. In children, it can develop from poor sitting habits, weak postural muscles, or in some cases underlying conditions. It is more commonly identified in boys than girls. Lordosis (Swayback) Lordosis is an exaggerated inward curve of the lower back, sometimes called swayback. Children with lordosis often appear to stand with their stomach pushed forward and their lower back deeply curved. It can be linked to tight hip flexors, particularly common in children who sit for long periods, and weak core muscles. Scoliosis Scoliosis is a sideways curvature of the spine, which can cause uneven hips or shoulders and sometimes visible asymmetry in the back. It is worth noting clearly: poor posture does not cause scoliosis, and neither does carrying a heavy school bag. Most scoliosis cases have no single identified cause. It is, however, a condition that benefits significantly from early detection. If you notice that your child’s shoulders or hips appear uneven, it is worth having them assessed. In clinical practice, it is common for children to present with more than one of these conditions simultaneously. Research found that 70% of children assessed had at least two postural defects at the same time. What Poor Posture Can Do to a Child’s Health The consequences of poor posture in children extend beyond the way they look when they sit. Back, neck, and shoulder pain are the most reported symptoms. Among children with screen-related postural problems, 74% reported neck and shoulder pain as their primary complaint. Back pain rates in children have also been rising steadily for at least two decades, according to a study tracking over one million young people across 45 countries. Headaches are a frequently overlooked consequence. Tension in the neck and upper back from sustained forward head posture can refer pain into the head, leading to recurring headaches that may be mistaken for other causes. Muscle fatigue develops when the body is held in a position it is not designed for. Muscles that are constantly working to compensate for misalignment tire more quickly, leaving children feeling physically drained. Research found that 50% of children assessed had low or reduced muscle strength, which is both a cause and consequence of poor postural habits. Reduced confidence is less discussed but worth raising. Children with visible postural problems, particularly pronounced rounding of the upper back, can experience self-consciousness about the way they look, which can affect their confidence in social settings. Chronic pain is the long-term risk. Poor posture left unaddressed through childhood does not simply disappear. It tends to become harder to correct over time and increases the likelihood of persistent musculoskeletal pain in adolescence and adulthood. Warning Signs Parents Should Look For Most postural problems develop gradually and without obvious pain in the early stages. These are the signs worth paying attention to: Consistent slouching when sitting at a table, on the couch, or in the car Head that sits noticeably forward of the shoulders Rounded or uneven shoulders Hips that appear uneven when standing Recurring complaints of back, neck, or shoulder soreness Headaches without a clear explanation Visible effort or discomfort when asked to sit or stand up straight A single observation on a bad day isn’t necessarily cause for concern. But if several of these are a consistent pattern, it is worth taking seriously. What Parents Can Do at Home There are practical changes that make a real difference, and most of them cost nothing. Raise screens to eye level The single most effective change for reducing forward head posture is positioning devices so children aren’t looking down. Phone and tablet stands are inexpensive and easy to use at a desk or table. Build in screen breaks Sustained postures, even correct ones, cause fatigue. Encourage a movement break every 20–30 minutes during screen time. Even a brief walk to the kitchen and back resets the muscles. Check the school bag Use a two-strap backpack, not a single-strap shoulder bag. The base should sit just above the waist, with the heaviest items packed closest to the back. If the bag looks heavy, it probably is. Weigh it and compare it against the 10–15% body weight guideline. Right-size the furniture at home At a correctly sized chair, a child should be able to sit with their feet flat on the floor, their knees at roughly a right angle, and their back supported. If they’re perched on an adult chair with their legs dangling, their posture will suffer regardless of how often you remind them to sit up straight. Encourage movement Swimming, yoga, and sports that involve varied, whole-body movement all help build the postural muscles children need. This doesn’t have to mean formal sport. Active outdoor play counts. Think about sleep Pillow height and mattress support matter. Pillows that are too thick or too flat hold the neck in a sustained awkward position through the night. Sleeping on the stomach is worth discouraging, as it places the neck in prolonged rotation. When to See a Chiropractor About Your Child’s Posture A chiropractic assessment for a child is non-invasive and thorough. It looks at spinal alignment, posture, range of motion, and muscle balance to identify problems that are not visible to the untrained eye. Chiropractic care for children differs from what adults typically receive. Techniques are adapted to suit a child’s size and developing body, and treatment plans are built around the child’s specific presentation, rather than a generic protocol. Where appropriate, a chiropractor will also guide parents on the home changes most relevant to their child’s condition. The years between childhood and adolescence represent the most important window for correction, while the spine is still developing and habits are still forming.
